I first learnt about sewing during my young days by mum as she would sew pretty, little dresses for me when festive seasons were near. Sewing was officially introduced during high school days in Loreto College of Quatre bornes. At that time. I hate sewing because it was so demanding as a subject and being a teenager trying to manage being getting good grades and doing extra-curricular activities, I did not have that much time to spend on my sewing project.
With time, I became fond of sewing while watching YouTube videos and I wanted to recreate my own pieces. I realized how sewing could help me design and recreate pieces of clothing at low prices. Fashion industry has a standard size which unfortunately does not fit everyone as everybody is unique and have different body shapes that the Fashion industry does not necessarily take into consideration when designing clothes. This has been an issue for decades and is still very much present till this date (Nittle, 2019). Having a dress tailor made versus buying a readymade dress are on two different price points. However, it would cost even cheaper if you create your own clothes. Sewing your clothes requires to have the measurements taken and having internet, it is easy to create patterns as well.
The fashion industry is often said to be the second most polluting in the world (Black, 2019) . People tend to throw their clothes when they no longer serve the purpose or do not fit right. Where does all this land? In landfill (Obviously). Sewing helps to reduce such pollution because through the act of sewing, we are able to repurpose the piece of clothing into something that is wearable or at least reusable. For example, if a dress does not fit right, with the skills and a sewing machine, one can turn it into a two piece or even a pillowcase if the material is suitable for such project. Since sewing requires much time and effort, people tend to use it even more, I believe. Taking myself for example, most clothes that I made are the clothes that I wear most because I know the real value of it. It is not expensive or from a reputed brand, but it is my own creation.
