My mum was into sewing and she would always sew my dresses when I was little. I first learnt the basics of sewing in my teenage years at my high school. At first, sewing was like a burden to me, especially embroidery. I would ask my mum to help me do most of the art works because it was too complicated and time consuming for me. The only time sewing was handy is when I needed to shorten my uniform dress because it was way below my knee (not the ideal student, I know).
As I grew up, I became keen about trying out new hobbies. I tried reading, photography, but my favorite hobby happens to be sewing. At first, I was weirded out about it because it was my least favorite thing to do in high school. I also tried doing embroidery again and it turned out kind of okay. I was still proud of my creation (even though I never wore it outside). My mum bought me my first sewing machine. My interest toward sewing grew even more. Sewing my own clothes give me satisfaction because I put effort in it.
I enjoy sewing because not only do I do it as a hobby, but it has enabled me to grow as an individual. I have learned how to develop patience which leads to personal satisfaction. I learnt about being independent because I get to choose every little detail that needs to be done with regard to the piece of art that I have to create. Having to go to different shops to buy piece of cloths or accessories to embellish my clothes makes me so happy and proud of myself.
Sewing has also helped me to bring out the creativity in me. I am able to experiment with different patterns or styles which can be trendy. Buying a ready-made clothing from the store is too mainstream but when I sew my clothes, I am able to add my own personal touch to differentiate myself from the ordinary fashion. My first project was sewing a pencil case from scratch because I was not confident enough to waste a good piece of cloth. To my surprise, it turned out to be good and my mum uses it now. I later tried sewing shorts and dresses and now, I can confidently say I know how to sew properly.
